Various people tried to stop Dante from leaving, but he brushed them off with far more success than I had when trying to get rid of him out on the balcony.

The only one he stopped for was Cecilia, telling her that it was lovely to see her. She replied with similar words and gave him a kiss on the cheek before waving us off with a wink in my direction. To my relief, we didn’t see Tamara.

I knew we should have made a classier exit, but I chose not to care. It was worth a scolding from Lara.

During the walk back to the hotel, both Dante and Tom seemed to understand my need for solitude. They talked with each other, not bothering to involve me in their conversation. I sent them a silent thank you and became lost in my own thoughts.

I had to figure out what I wanted and how I felt about everything. It all came down to fear. The fear of being one among everyone else, one of the countless women Dante had invited to the privacy of his room. The fear of feeling anything at all. The fear of being vulnerable.

Love had earned me nothing but hurt so far. Dad had more or less abandoned us, and Mom had left Ayden and me far too early. It wasn’t her fault, of course, but it didn’t matter. Love hurt.

Dante deserved to be loved, and I did love him in a twisted kind of way, but I was too afraid. I knew too much about his ways to trust him. And love was about trust, right?

I wasn’t brave enough, but even a coward could long for what he couldn’t have.

The elevator ride had never felt so long. Tom and Dante weren’t talking anymore, and I caught both of them stealing glances at me. Wishing I could hide, I pretended not to notice, and as the door slid open, I stalked out and didn’t stop until I had to search my pocket for the card to open the door.

“Goodnight, boys,” Tom said before disappearing into his room.

Still fumbling to find my card, I felt Dante’s presence behind me. A few seconds of silence passed, then his soft lips found the nape of my neck. The touch was light, but I tensed, drowning in an assault of thoughts that tried to tear me apart. Unsure of everything, but sure at the same time, I gave in, placing my forehead against the door, eyes closed. His kisses made my entire body tingle despite the raging storm inside my head, and my soaked skin burned beneath his attention.

“You think too much,” he whispered in my ear, finishing with a gentle tug with his teeth.

I gasped, unprepared and unable to withstand what he gave me. I wanted it desperately, and the fear I felt only heightened everything inside of me. I felt more—I craved more.

Dante searched my pockets while I stifled the sounds that wanted to escape my throat. I could barely breathe as his hands roamed across my body.
